Rendered on a ground of fine gold leaf, this profile portrait is characteristic of Palacios's mature work, in which he combined natural pigments and mixed materials with metal leaf to build a weathered, luminous surface. The blue ribbon and the loosely brushed passages of green and ochre are typical of the introspective female figures that recur throughout his later career.

About the artist

Alirio Palacios, 1938–2015

Born in the Orinoco delta town of Tucupita, Alirio Palacios (1938–2015) trained at the School of Plastic and Applied Arts in Caracas, then studied printmaking in China and in Warsaw. He became one of Venezuela's most versatile twentieth-century artists: painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor and designer, with horses, women in profile and wide landscapes returning throughout a body of work he often built up in gold leaf and mixed materials. His prints are held in museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago and Harvard Art Museums, and his paintings, prints and large-scale sculptures continue to be actively sought by collectors of modern Venezuelan and Latin American art.

Horses were a recurring subject for Palacios throughout his career, rendered here in a loose, painterly mixed-media technique on paper. The red bridle and patterned saddle cloth stand out against a near-black ground, a device Palacios used often to bring a single motif into sharp relief.

One of a small number of large-scale metal horse sculptures Palacios produced in the 2000s, built up from welded and riveted sheet metal over an iron, bronze and pewter armature and finished with pigment and varnish. The decorated saddle cloth, picked out in red and pale blue, evokes the ornamented war horses referenced in the title. This is the first work in the Sobre el Caballo de Gengis Khan series, and appears on the cover of Alirio Palacios's book Caballos. Esculturas y grandes papeles 2003–2006. The sculpture comes on a wooden support.

A characteristic bronze by the Dutch-Venezuelan sculptor Cornelis Zitman, showing his rounded, monumental treatment of the female figure, seated here on a simple ladder-back chair with her arms crossed. Zitman cast his sculptures in small editions; this is number 4 of 8.

About the artist

Cornelis Zitman, 1926–2016

Born in Leiden and trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Cornelis Zitman (1926–2016) left the Netherlands for Venezuela in 1947. He first worked as a furniture designer, then moved to painting and sculpture, learning bronze casting in the Netherlands. After his first Paris show at Dina Vierny's gallery in 1971, he devoted himself to sculpture, becoming known internationally for sturdy, rounded bronze figures of women, often seated, inspired by the people of Venezuela. His work is held in the Musée Maillol in Paris and in the National Art Gallery and Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas, and his bronzes are a recognized presence in the Latin American sculpture market.

About the artist

Francisco Narváez, 1905–1982

Born in Porlamar on Margarita Island, Francisco Narváez (1905–1982) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Caracas and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Back in Venezuela in 1931, he worked with the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva on public sculpture, including the Las Toninas fountain in Caracas's Plaza O'Leary. He is regarded as the foremost pioneer of modern Venezuelan sculpture, moving from carved stone and wood to bronze and monumental abstract forms, and his rounded female bronzes remain among the most collected works of twentieth-century Venezuelan sculpture. He won the National Prize for Sculpture in 1941 and for Painting in 1948, and a museum of contemporary art bearing his name opened in Porlamar in 1979. Posthumous bronze casts of his work continue to be produced and authorized by the Fundación Francisco Narváez.

A still life of fruit, vegetables and a watchful cat set against a flat, dark ground, in the precisely rendered, quietly surreal manner Dávila turned to later in his career, after his earlier reputation as a painter of urban and social subjects.

About the artist

José A. Dávila, born 1935

José Antonio Dávila was born in New York and grew up in Caracas, where he studied at the School of Plastic and Applied Arts. He began as a realist painter of social and urban subjects and won several top prizes at Venezuelan national salons in the late 1950s. In 1970 he was a founding member of the group Presencia 70, alongside Oswaldo Vigas and other leading Venezuelan figurative painters. His early work explores solitude and modern urban life, and he later turned to precisely rendered, quietly surreal still lifes that remain his best-known paintings among collectors of Venezuelan figurative art.

An abstracted composition of interlocking white figures outlined in black, with small passages of orange, blue and yellow, in the pictorial language Oswaldo Vigas developed by combining pre-Columbian and African imagery with European modernism.

About the artist

Oswaldo Vigas, 1923–2014

Born in Valencia, Venezuela, Oswaldo Vigas (1923–2014) earned a medical degree while teaching himself to paint, and never practised medicine. His painting La gran bruja won Venezuela's National Prize in 1952, which took him to Paris, where he lived for twelve years among the avant-garde and represented Venezuela at the 1954 Venice Biennale. He blended pre-Columbian and African imagery with modernist abstraction and figuration, and is widely considered one of the pioneers of Latin American modernism, with paintings now held in major museum collections and regularly offered at international Latin American art auctions.
